11.1 Introduction
In this Chapter we shall examine skill
and knowledge enhancing technologies in more detail. Attention
will be focused on machine tool systems. We will begin by providing
an overview of some historical developments and an overview of
the design problem as it is seen from the skill oriented design
paradigm. We will also compare this perspective to the more common
view derived from the technology oriented design paradigm.
Our attention will then be focused on the
organisational and psychological criteria that are judged to
be relevant to the design problem. We will then undertake a skills
and knowledge analysis to establish areas where computer-based
technologies might be applied, and then look at some designs
that have been developed using the skill oriented perspective.
For the purpose of clarity and understanding
we will confine our attention to one particular type of machine
tool, the lathe. In principle, what we have to say, however,
can also be extended to other types of machine tools. |
