Agility Workshop - the Strategic Management of Uncertainty

Typically executives deal with strategic uncertainty via scenario analysis and contingency planning, or they ignore the uncertainty. This workshop takes people beyond scenario analysis and contingency planning into a world of competency that allows enterprises to cope with uncertainty.

The workshop deals with the topic of agility - how to handle significant uncertainty in business. Mind-sets, culture, assumptions, key principles, and the structure of strategic processes are examined, all with the aim of showing executives how to move forward towards an enterprise that can adapt and change and live with uncertainty.

The workshop is not specific to one type of industry/sector so is suitable for people from both manufacturing and non-manufacturing firms as well as people from different disciplines. The focus is on dealing with structural uncertainties, rather than operational uncertainties, but the focus can be set according to specific interests. As the main focus is on structural uncertainty, the workshop has a strong strategic orientation and is therefore suitable for senior executives responsible for strategic development and planning. A workshop focused more on operational uncertainties would be suitable for senior managers responsible for implementing strategy.

The workshop is suitable for between 8 and 20 people who will be organised into small groups (of about 4 people) for the purpose of carrying out the practical exercise. Participants are also encouraged to express their personal interests, problems etc. so that they can share these with other participants.

At the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Be aware of the difference between operational and structural uncertainty;
  • Understand the influence of mind-sets, culture and assumptions on attitudes towards uncertainty;
  • Understand basic principles for dealing with uncertainty;
  • Be aware of different strategic processes that are suited to handling uncertainty;
  • Know how to apply strategic tools for identifying and prioritizing structural uncertainties;
  • Be able to apply techniques for dealing with structural uncertainties.

The structure of the workshop is as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Group practical exercise
  • Analysis of exercise
  • People, mind-sets, culture and assumptions
  • Principles and techiques for dealing with significant uncertainty
  • Different strategy making processes
  • Strategic method and tools
  • Wind-up and summary
The workshop can be given in-house privately for company executives (either on or off premises) or as a part of a larger event (a conference). The workshop can be customised to specific interests.
