Post-Mass Production Enterprise
Reading List
-
- Since the mid 1970s it has been evident
that mass production economies have faced a crisis. The reasons
for the demise of mass production are complex. Some of the literate
quoted in the reading list provides insights.
Some macro-economist, politicians and large enterprises have
been aware of the changes and have responded in various ways.
Since 1979 (beginning with Thatcher and Regan) we have seen in
the West, the disassembly of the mass production economies which
were established following World War two (deregulation, open
markets, downsizing traditional industries, etc.). Companies
have shifted strategies, pulled out of markets, pursued variety
as a means of differentiating themselves from their competitors,
and so on.
The collapse of mass production economies and associated mass
production firms has been evident for over 20 years, although
it was only in the early 1990s that a wider state of awareness
was achieved. Since about 1980, many reports and books have been
published dealing with issues surrounding the development of
post-mass production enterprise.
The list of books and reports provided is only a sample, but
will give some background to the current interest in the catch
all definition of agility and help to put it into context. What
you will discover is that agility is only the latest in a series
of names that have been given to the post-mass production era.
Other names that you will encounter are: niche production; flexible
specialisation; post-Fordism; human-centred manufacturing; anthropocentric
production systems; neo-Fordism; lean production; mass customisation;
and several more.
